Eastern Iowa youth building for their future

More than 60 kids in Cedar Rapids put their creativity on display Saturday.

The 22nd annual Block Kids Building contest gave participants 100 blocks and an hour to construct their vision.

The competitors then took their work to a judge and answered questions about their creation.

The event looks to build awareness about careers in the construction industry.

"A lot of these children think about being teachers, lawyers, doctors, astronauts, things like that.  There are so many exciting careers in construction that they haven't thought of," said Darby Winger, the event chair.

The winner was sixth grader Dawson Gibbons of Harding Middle School.  He'll move on to a regional competition.

The event was sponsored by the National Association of Women in Construction.
