Foul smell still lingers at Orchard Hill

Orchard Hill Elementary School is still struggling to find the source of a foul smell, Dave Stoakes, Cedar Falls Community School District Superintendent, said.

Last year, classrooms at the school were vacated after a strong odor caused students and staff to become sick. This smell was caused by a chemical used to remove asbestos tiles and it subsided once construction was over, Stoakes said.

Now, the smell is back and has caused students to move out of four classrooms.

Although some unknown irritant is still in the air, school officials said they have ruled out everything from mold to dead animals.

Classes are currently meeting in the library. On Monday, two fifth and sixth grade classrooms will move across the road to Bethany Bible Chapel while school officials continue to search for the source of the smell.
