DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Several Eastern Iowa fire departments are getting a financial boost.

The Hiawatha Fire Department and the Leon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department are getting grant money from the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) Program, Congressman Dave Loebsack said.

Fire departments in Dubuque County have also secured a grant money, this one from FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant, Jack Koetz, Centralia/Peosta Fire Chief, said.

Loebsack's office said the combined total for Hiawatha and Leon Fire Department is $100,428. Dubuque County stations will receive $212,266.

That money is allowed to go toward firefighting equipment, facility improvements, health programs, and/or training programs.

Dubuque County will use the funding to replace several Iowa State Mutual Aid stations and some equipment, Koetz said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Hiawatha and Leon fire department had heard official word on the grants.
