Approved bill aims to crack down on illegal immigrant workers

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

A new bill allows anyone to file a complaint with the Attorney General's Office alleging a business is employing an illegal immigrant.

On Monday, Iowa lawmakers voted to go forward with the bill.  This means police and other law officials must investigate complaints alleging illegal immigrant workers in a business.

Supporters of the measure say they want to deter illegal workers which would benefit law-abiding employers and employees.

Opponents say it's the federal government's job to enforce immigration law.  Critics are also concerned this bill could encourage racial profiling.
