Black Hawk County Deputy will challenge Sheriff Thompson in upcoming election

A Black Hawk County deputy will run against current Sheriff Tony Thompson in the upcoming election.

Deputy Bill Herkelman has worked for the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office since 1992. He has served on the Tri-County Drug Task Force twice in that time. Last year, Herkelman was promoted to Sergeant and now works second shift in the Jail Division.

Herkelman plans to focus on fiscal responsibility. He wants to work to reduce the Sheriff's budget and implement cost saving measure in the office. He also wants to reorganize the command structure to put more deputies on the street.

Herkelman graduated from Indianola High School in 1991. He is currently working toward an Associate's Degree in Business at Hawkeye Community College.

Herkelman and his wife Michelle have four daughters. Three of his daughters are currently attending Cedar Falls High School, including Cassy Herkelman who made history last year being the first female wrestler to compete and advance at the state high school wrestling tournament.

Sheriff Tony Thompson was elected in 2008.
