Waterloo Exchange Club names 2011 Officer of the Year

The Waterloo Exchange Club has named Officer Randy Hammitt as the 2011 Officer of the Year.

Hammitt came to the Waterloo Police Department in 1983 after graduating from Webster City High School and earning an Associate of Arts Degree in Police Science from Western Iowa Tech.

Hammitt has worked with the Patrol Division, the Community Action Team and the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Task Force.

"Officer Hammitt is a perfect example of the department's Community Policing initiative. He has a good working relationship with many businesses and citizens in Waterloo. His knowledge and experience is an asset to the Police Department and the Citizens of Waterloo," Dan Trelka, Director of Safety Services Director, said in a written statement.

Officer Hammitt lives near Fairbank and runs his own sawmill. He is currently training for a half marathon and hopes to run a marathon before he retires.

Hammitt was honored at a luncheon at the Waterloo Elks Lodge on Monday.
