Governor says Iowa needs to limit property tax increase

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Governor Terry Branstad is telling residential property owners to be on the lookout for a massive tax hike over the next decade if the legislature doesn't crack down on future increases.

City leaders say they don't plan on letting taxes increase, and don't require state assistance.

By the 2022 fiscal year property tax collections will jump from $5.1 billion to $7.4 billion, said the Governor's office.

This leap comes from a projected $50 billion increase in taxable value of residential properties. The taxes are put toward public safety, roads and city services.

Some city leaders aren't convinced the governor's projections are accurate. They say city councils would probably adjust tax rates to protect citizens from pricey bills.
