Waterloo church dedicates hall to Hazel Dorothy Scott

Members of a Waterloo church dedicated one of its halls after activist and entertainer Hazel Dorothy Scott.

Jubilee United Methodist Church wanted to honor Scott who broke barriers for African-American women on Broadway and in radio, television and film.

She was known as a musician, singer and actress but she also spoke out against racial injustice.

The church will use the hall to showcase films they hope will inspire people.

"Reach out to both adults and youth alike, showing films that will hopefully inspire them, encourage them to think beyond their surroundings and begin to realize that there are several people in the past that paved the road for them," said Rev. Abraham Funchess, pastor of Jubilee UMC.

The hall will also host events featuring Southern cuisine, musicals and vocal performances.
