UI Dance Marathon raises more than $1 million - KWWL - Eastern Iowa Breaking News, Weather, Closings

UI Dance Marathon reaches another record

It's a fun event with a serious purpose - the Dance Marathon on the campus of the University of Iowa.

The marathon raised $1, 369,157.18 to help sick children and their families..

It's celebrating its 18th year with the help of a record-breaking 2,500 volunteers.

That's about 100 more than last year.

Adults, children and UI students dance for 24 hours in the Iowa Memorial Union to help raise money for patients in the Pediatric Cancer Center of the ui's Children's Hospital.

"This organization takes a lot of love, for lack of a better word. The students put in countless hours, they keep going when they're tired and they do what they need to do and they get it done and in the end it pays off. We donate a lot of money to the hospital, so they're doing a good thing and they see the benefits," says student advisor Courtney Bond.

Last year's Dance Marathon resulted in just more than $1.2 million in donations.
