State speech contest held in Cedar Rapids

Budding thespians from across eastern Iowa converged on Cedar Rapids hoping to make their mark and find fame and glory but educators say the state speech contest held at Washington High isn't about winning but about what it takes to do well.  2,200 students from 110 schools in the southeastern part of the state took part. Categories ranged from mime to choral reading to TV news. "We call it a contest, not a competition, because the kids are, it's a learning experience, it's a fun event for them, but they also get some life-long learning," said contest manager Carrie Tinkham.

The all-state finals will be held February 18 in Ames.
