Marine surprises her son for his sixth birthday

D'Kylan Woods was looking forward to celebrating his sixth birthday with his classmates at Orange Elementary School in Waterloo. But, he thought, a very important person was missing out.

"Don't you wish your mom was here?" we asked him. "Yeah," he replied with a sad look on his face.

D'Kylan had no idea that his mother, Staff Sergeant Shakelia Woods, is down the hall waiting to surprise him.

Shakelia is enlisted full-time with the U.S. Marine Corps, and was going through several months of training in South Carolina. Shakelia completed her time early, making it possible to surprise her son for his sixth birthday.

"He doesn't have any clue I'm coming," she said. "He has no idea I'll be here today. So I don't know what he's going to be like, I just know he's going to melt in his shoes."

We told the kids a celebrity is coming to read to their class. Instead, Shakelia came through the door, and D'Kylan went running into his mother's arms.

"It was so perfect. I couldn't have asked for a better moment. That's all I wanted. I just wanted that one moment," Shakelia said.

D'Kylan was in a bit of a state of shock. But he was clearly thrilled to have mom back.

Meanwhile, Shakelia took a moment to thank the people who watched out for her little guy while she was away.

"I'm appreciative of what everyone has done. His teachers, my mom, the principal, the school," she said.

As you might expect, the feeling is mutual.

"Thank you for the service you do for us," D'Kylan's teacher Janelle Kimpston. "You are so welcome!" Shakelia replied.

D'Kylan has been living with his grandparents while his mom was away. Mother and son are moving back to Washington D.C., where Shakelia is currently stationed. His grandmother, Sheila, said she's sad to see D'Kylan go. But she's proud of what her daughter is accomplishing in the military.
