DES MOINES (KWWL) -

The Air Force recommended pulling F-16 fighter jets from an Air National Guard base in Des Moines Friday.

The recommendation is part of an effort to cut the defense budget, trimming the Air Force Budget by $8.7 billion.

Air Force Secretary Michael Donley says the cuts are strategic and spread out through the country.

"Just about every state will be affected by the aircraft and or the manpower adjustments that go with these changes," Donley said during a press conference.

The cuts will extend to jobs, planes and drones.

"All of those four structure changes yield the reduction of 9,900 personnel-- that's 39 hundred active duty, 51 hundred guards personnel and 900 reserve personnel," Donley said. "We've carefully balanced out active reserve component changes to make sure that we can meet the demanding and sustainable (inaudible) that are part of the strategic environment going forward."

The proposal is already meeting some resistance from legislators.
