UPDATE: Fire at Cedar Rapids water treatment plant

Cedar Rapids firefighters were called to the Water Pollution Control facility on Bertram Road Friday morning for a fire in an incerator building.

Crews responded to 7525 Bertram Road SE at 7:19 a.m. and were directed to two, three-story buildings known as the Solid Dewatering building and the incinerator building.

Once inside, firefighters found that the fire started near a conveyor belt in the incerator building and spread along a wall to the roof.

Damage was contained mainly to the area near the conveyor belt.

The incerator building has been out-of-service since September for flood recovery repairs and the conveyor belt was not in use.

Firefighters spent about two hours on scene.

Staff at the WPC is trying to determine if there was any damage to the controls and electrical system in the buildings.
