Fire destroys vacant home in Cedar Rapids


Fire destroyed a vacant home and damaged two others on Friday morning in Cedar Rapids.

It happened at 1707 Washington Avenue SE at 3:23 a.m. Fire crews were first called by neighbors reporting heavy smoke billowing out of the roof of the two-story house. 

Fire crews immediately started putting out the fire at that home and two adjacent homes at 1701 and 1711 Washington Avenue. One adult and three children were able to safely get out of the home at 1701 Washington Ave. The family's house is still livable. The other home at 1711 was vacant. 

No one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
