#1 Wartburg rallies to beat #2 Augsburg 22-17

It was much closer than the last time they met, but top ranked Wartburg beat second ranked Augsburg 22-17 in a battle of Division III wrestling powers.

Wartburg which beat the Auggies 29-6 at the National Duals last month, had a much tougher time in the rematch as Augsburg got bonus points from two wrestlers who didn't compete in the first meet.

At 149, top ranked Tony Valek overcame an early 5-0 deficit to pin the Knights' Drew Wagenhoffer in the second period. Valek improved to 22-0 with the win.

At 157, the Auggies defending national champion Orlando Ponce picked up an 11-3 major decision victory to give Augsburg a 13-6 lead in the meet.

Then, Wartburg picked up four straight major decision victories.

At 165, Landon Williams, at 174, Bradley Banks, at 184, Dylan Azinger and two-time NCAA Champion Byron Tate all picked up bonus points to help the Knights clinch the victory.

The Knights won 6 of the 10 matches to improve to 18-1 on the season while Augsburg falls to 8-2.
