Republican budget plan asks state workers to pay for health coverage

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

A budget plan in Des Moines would ask state workers to share the cost of their health care coverage.

The $6 billion plan includes a one percent spending increase over this year's budget. It includes a provision where state employees would pay $200 per month in health premiums.

House Speaker Kraig Paulsen says that amount is less than most workers in Iowa pay for their health coverage. However, Paulsen admits, the plan would mean changes to contracts with state employees.

The contract with the state's largest union runs through the summer of 2013. Danny Homan, who heads that union, says he has no plans to open contract discussions.
