IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The head of the Broadway Neighborhood Center has been accused of not reporting a suspected sexual abuse to the Iowa Department of Human Services.

According to Iowa City police, 44-year-old Susan Elizabeth Freeman-Murdah, the director of the Broadway Neighborhood Center, was told by a lead teacher with Headstart that a mother suspected her daughter was a victim of sexual abuse by a teacher in the Headstart program.

Police say Freeman-Murdah met with the mother and then conducted her own investigation without contacting DHS or the police.

Freeman-Murdah is charged with violating Iowa code pertaining to mandatory and permissive reporters.

Broadway Neighborhood Center of Johnson County is a human services agency that provides programs and activities that reach more than 200 children and up to 100 adults each day.

The investigation into the suspected abuse is now in the hands of the Iowa City Police Department and the Iowa Department of Human Services.
