2011 highway deaths lowest in nearly 70 years

The Iowa Department of Transportation reports 364 fatalities on Iowa roadways in 2011. That's the lowest number of roadway deaths in Iowa since 1944, according to the DOT.

The DOT cites several safety improvements in vehicles and on the roads for the lower numbers.

Seat belts continue to be a major factor in preventing traffic fatalities and serious injuries. 208 lives were saved because of seat belt use in 2011.  More than 41% of all traffic deaths in that time period were people who were not wearing seat belts.

On the highway, shoulder and centerline rumble strips, safety edges and paved shoulders, and median cable barriers have also contributed to safer travel.
