WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -

Four fire departments in Iowa's First Congressional District have been awarded a total of nearly $700,000 in grants from the Department of Homeland Security to help purchase new life-saving equipment.

"The men and women who serve as Iowa's first responders put their lives on the line – often on a completely volunteer basis – to fight what others fear.  These grants will help provide the equipment and tools they need to save lives," Rep. Bruce Braley said in a written statement.

The Assistance for Firefighters grant awards announced today are as follows:

  • $125,286 for the St. Lucas Fire Department to purchase new radios for fire trucks and new pagers for EMTs and firefighters
  • $342,555 for the Fairbank Fire Department
  •  $13,538 for the West Union Fire Department for new training equipment
  •  $217,640 for the Clinton Fire Department to purchase new heart defibrillators and EKG machines
