UI and ex-student settle over sexual misconduct charges

The University of Iowa has agreed to a financial settlement with a former student who claims she was pressured to let a political science professor fondle her in exchange for a higher grade.

The settlement allows the school to avoid a trial about its handling of sexual misconduct allegations against former professor Arthur Miller. Arthur was charged with bribery for allegedly offering to give four female students higher grades in exchange for sexual favors. He committed suicide in 2008 shortly the charges were filed.

The now former student claimed school officials failed to immediately act after she registered her complaint and that this allowed Miller to harass the other three women.

The student's attorney says she is pleased, but the settlement requires her to keep the terms confidential.
