Ice in warmer temperatures may fool you

Officials say ice may appear to be thick, but use caution if you're heading out on the ice to go fishing.

The warning comes after two people fell through ice and drowned in southwest Iowa Monday night.

It happened in Madison County, about four miles north of Patterson.  Authorities identify the victims as 64-year-old Linda Jones, of rural Prole, and 80-year-old George Pierce, of Des Moines.

A wide hole in the ice was about ten feet from the shore -- the water there was seven to eight feet deep.

Officials say despite the warm temperatures, the ice appeared thick enough for fishing.

"It's deceiving. It really is. I went down there, I was down by the pond and it appears thick. It does. You look at it and you just slip in judgment and it catches you," said Jason Barnes, a Madison County deputy.
