CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department says that the results of tests done to determine what caused 24 students and staff at Harding Middle School to become sick are inconclusive.

The students and staff became ill on Jan. 30, when a mysterious smell showed up in the cafeteria area.  Classes were cancelled the next day as staff did a thorough cleaning.

Greg Buelow, Public Information Officer for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, says about 200 people were in the cafeteria when a mysterious odor caused a group of 24 students and staff closest to the kitchen to become ill, with symptoms ranging from coughing, eye irritation, burning in the throat, nausea and vomiting.  Eight were taken to local hospitals for evaluation.

Buelow says that all tests done by his department and the Linn County Department of Public Health came back normal.
