RAGBRAI route announced


Officials with RAGBRAI announced the overnight towns for the 40th annual bike ride across Iowa.

The announcement was made in Des Moines with a live stream available for RAGBRAI enthusiasts around the world. The event draws 10,000 riders from across the globe, and thousands more who join in the festivities each night.

The 2012 overnight towns are Sioux Center, Cherokee, Lake View, Webster City, Cedar Rapids, Marshalltown, Anamosa, Clinton.

The route is 471.1 miles and is the 18th shortest in the history of the ride. It is also the 11th flattest route in history. Cedar Rapids is the largest city on the route and the ride from Marshalltown to Cedar Rapids will be the longest and hilliest.

The ride started in 1973 and is organized by The Des Moines Register. This year's theme is "Celebrating 40 Years of Iowa."

The pass-through towns will be announced in March. The ride is scheduled for July 22-28.
