WEST UNION (KWWL) -

An eastern Iowa family helped by the TV show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" is paying it forward for a family not chosen by the show.

This weekend, the Gibbs family is holding an open house so people can see their extreme makeover home and help a Buchanan County family raise money to get an extreme home makeover of their own - without the TV spotlight.

The Gibbs family heard about the Spece family from Independence who also applied to be on "Extreme Makeover", but were turned down.

This weekend, the Gibbs family is holding an open house at their W. Union home so others can see more than what the TV cameras are able to show.

Entry fees collected at the door all go towards the building of a home for the Spece family.

Several members of the Spece family live with spinal muscular atrophy.

"Yes, it'll be nice to have a new house that's built specifically for us in wheelchairs. Also being able to get up to everything and having adequate space to get around," said daughter, Jackie Heinz.
