A day in jail is about to cost more

The price for a day in the Black Hawk County Jail will increase $5 starting in February.

Sheriff Tony Thompson says the "room and board" fee has not changed since it was first set at $65 in 1997.

Starting Feb. 1, one day behind bars will cost $70.

"Obviously, budgets get tighter and tighter and as we can look for ways to increase our revenue, this is one of those places where I think is somewhat of a no-brainer," Thompson said. "If it costs us, the real hard cost is $2 to $74 dollars, lets get something in there that is relatively close to what the remuneration ought to be."

During the last three years, the monthly revenue for the jail has increased $33,000.
