Apparent gas leak causes evacuation at BH Co. Courthouse

A sewer gas leak from a broken pipe caused a quick evacuation in downtown Waterloo Thursday morning.

At the KWWL building at 4th and Franklin, a sewer gas odor surfaced just before 11:00 a.m.
Then police started getting reports of a possible gas leak at the Black Hawk County Courthouse.

Before emergency crews arrived, all courthouse employees had evacuated the building as a precaution.

The Waterloo Fire Department then swept the building, but found no evidence of a gas leak. Employees were allowed to re-enter the courthouse.

The apparent leak did not force an evacuation at the nearby sheriff's office and city hall buildings.

Waterloo Director of Safety Services Dan Trelka says the gas from the pipe drifted into tunnels and spread through downtown.

MidAmerican Energy says there was no construction or accidental run-in with a gas line in the area.
