Czech Museum opposes Penford expansion plan

Czech Museum officials are asking the City of Cedar Rapids to block plans by Penford Products to expand into Riverside Park.

In December, Penford sent a letter to the city asking to purchase the 11-acre park. But on the other side of the park is the recently relocated National Czech and Slovak Museum. Officials say they don't want to lose the only buffer between the factory and the tourism center of the Czech Village.

"If the odor and the noise were to impact the visitors... that would have a negative impact on the businesses here," said Gail Maughton, CEO of the National Czech & Slovak Museum.

Officials are also concerned about losing delivery access to the museum via A Street SW. The road runs between Penford and the park along the river, providing access to the loading dock at the back of the museum.
