Sleepy driver blamed for accident near Center Point that shut down 380

The Iowa State Patrol says an accident on I-380 Tuesday, that shut down the northbound lanes for about three hours, was caused by a sleepy driver.

Trooper Craig Bixler says that Rob Loftus, 22, of Lawler, fell asleep at the wheel at around 11:40 a.m. Tuesday.

They say Loftus was southbound on 380 when he went through the median into the northbound lanes, hit the trailer of one semi and then hit a second semi before coming to rest in the ditch.

Loftus was flown to St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids by Lifeguard helicopter.

Bixler says that Loftus is in stable condition, but couldn't say if he was still at St. Luke's.

Neither semi driver was injured.
