The Dunkerton City Council voted 4-1 Monday night to keep the city's police department as the council debated how to balance their budget.

Last month, Dunkerton Mayor Michael Schares asked the Black Hawk County Sheriff about eliminating the police department and having the sheriff's department handle police service for the town.

The council will now look at other options like cutting hours.

The council will vote on the issue again on February 6.
