UPDATE: Iowa Lottery officials may not pay out jackpot

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The Iowa lottery says it will deny payment on a mysterious jackpot unless a lawyer explains where the ticket came from.

A Hot Lotto ticket worth at least $7.5 Million was turned in on December 29th in Iowa City, just minutes before its one year deadline. Crawford Shaw, THE New York lawyer who signed the ticket, has not said how he ended up with it or who the proceeds are going to.

Lottery CEO Terry Rich says Shaw's refusal to provide details raises questions about the identity of the actual winner or winner and may be a sign that a prohibited player may be involved.

Lottery officials say they need to know by Friday who handled the ticket from when it was purchased until it was redeemed and if the ticket was handled legally.
