Dental clinic helps students and saves you money

Marlene Radloff started coming to the dental clinic at Hawkeye Community College about 11 years ago.

"My cousin, she's from Independence and she wanted to be a student here and she asked will you volunteer to be a patient for me. I'm like all right. I came back ever since," said Marlene Radloff.

Radloff's visits give dental students at Hawkeye Community College the hands-on experience they need before graduating.

"I love it here," said Radloff.

The clinic is used by two separate programs at Hawkeye Community College. Dental hygiene students use it on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Dental assisting students use it on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Radloff visits the clinic every three months.

"I have periodontal disease. It's like deep cleaning. My friends have the same thing, and they spend thousands of dollars and mine's $30. I'd be crazy not to come here," said Radloff.

Whether you have dental insurance or not -- the cost is always just $30 for adults and $15 for children.

The students can't do everything, but can provide basic restorative needs, cleanings, sealants and fluoride treatments.

The students work closely with faculty and professionals in the community.

"They're so gentle. They really are," said Marlene Radloff.

All you have to do is call the clinic to make an appointment.

Keep in mind, the appointments do take longer than a normal dentist office visit for teaching purposes.

"People should come here. There's nothing to lose. Everything to gain," said Radloff.

The clinic is taking patients through April.

February is Dental Hygiene Month, so the clinic is offering a special deal to any college student or college employee. Instead of $30. The cost during February is just $15.

To make an appointment, call 319-296-1030.
