Occupy demonstrators protest corporate political influence

Saturday is the two year anniversary of the United States supreme court's Citizen's United decision.

The ruling allows under the First Amendment, corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money in influencing political processes.

Protestors are hoping for changes to that decision.

Activists demonstrated in front of more than 80 courthouses across 40 states Friday, including outside of the federal courthouse in Cedar Rapids.

Organizers hope to overturn the 2010 supreme court ruling and to influence lawmakers into creating a constitutional amendment that does not allow political campaign spending to be a form of speech protected under the First Amendment.

"You cannot have a democracy when you have moneyed interest that can purchase the political system and that's what we're doing," said Judith Pedersen-Benn.

Demonstrators say they will continue to try to raise awareness to empower people to understand threats to democracy and what they can do about it.
