Iowa City bar faces 30-day license suspension

An Iowa City bar is facing a 30-day liquor license suspension after an appeals court reinstated a regulatory sanction for serving underage drinkers during a police sting.

The Iowa Court of Appeals on Thursday overturned a lower court's decision dismissing a complaint against Bo-James by the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division.

The court found "substantial evidence" to support the agency's finding that Bo-James didn't take reasonable steps to determine whether two 20-year-old patrons cooperating with police were 21. The two walked past a doorman without being carded and were later served alcohol.

Because the complaint was the second in two years, it carries a 30-day suspension and a $1,500 fine.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that Owner Leah Cohen says she will appeal to the Iowa Supreme Court.
