CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Officials in Cedar Rapids say the public's water was not contaminated after a chlorine leak at the Northwest Water Treatment Plant on Ellis Road NW Tuesday evening.

Water Department employees said an alarm went off around 7:40 p.m. in the chlorine cylinder room, indicating the release of more than one part per million of chlorine gas.

Fire crews from Cedar Rapids and Atkins responded in Hazardous Material suits and used ammonia to find the source of the leak.

Officials said the leak was identified between 17 and 19 parts per million of chlorine.

The leak was fixed around 9:35 p.m.

No one was injured.
