Opening statements delivered in Wyatt Johnson trial

Attorneys have delivered opening statements this morning in the second trial for Wyatt Johnson.

Police say Johnson stabbed 18-year-old Kevin Garcia in a fight at Waterloo's Exchange Park in April 2009.

The first trial for Johnson ended in a mistrial in August 2011.

There was a dispute whether witnesses could testify a second time after new evidence was introduced in the courtroom.

Johnson is charged with first degree murder and also charged with attempted murder because police say he wounded others with a knife.

After opening statements, prosecutors called their first witness.
The woman was at Exchange Park for her son's baseball practice.

She told the court how she called 911 when she saw a fight brewing, and called back again when the fight started.

The court heard the tape of the 911 calls.

Newschannel 7's John Wilmer is covering the Wyatt Johnson trial today, and will have live reports on the KWWL News at Noon, and 5:00 & 6:00.
