iPads give Denver elementary students hands-on experience

Every classroom at Denver Elementary has at least three iPads. Every classroom at Denver Elementary has at least three iPads.

"I am tracing letters," one Denver kindergartner said as he runs his finger along the screen of one of Denver Elementary's iPads.

Schools across Eastern Iowa are integrating new technology into their curriculum and the newest thing is iPads.

"For us, it's all about engagement. If we can increase levels of student engagement, we are going to increase student achievement," Kim Tierney, Denver Elementary Principal, said.

She said one of the best parts of integrating the iPads in the classroom is the immediate and interactive feed back it gives.

For example, the students using the iPads get feedback after each question they answer,  instead of waiting to get their worksheets checked by a teacher.

"I walk into a classroom, and the first thing they want to do is show me this application in which they are learning multiplication facts, and they are so excited about it," Tierney said.

She said a lot of her student's Christmas lists have now changed with technology.

She said she is looking forward to seeing how this piece of technology will benefit the students in the future.

The iPads were intergrated into the classroom after a fundraising campaign. There at least three iPads in each classroom with a total of 60 in the whole elementary.
