Eastern Iowans pay tribute to MLK

More than 100 people paid tribute to slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. at a banquet in Waterloo Sunday night.

The banquet also recognized young adults who were essay and award winners and paid tribute to a man who changed the lives of millions of Americans.

"We do the event to honor the memory of Doctor Martin Luther King, and it's a way to bring the community together to come out and celebrate all the things that he did to make this world a better place to live in," said banquet chairperson LaTanya Graves.

Hawkeye Community College sponsors the event.

Proceeds benefit student scholarships, the Martin Luther King, Junior Center, and the African American Heritage League.
