Biofuels industry receives bulk of state aid

New figures show biofuels companies made up more than half of the top 50 recipients awarded state aid since 2003.

Valero energy's plants in Albert City, Charles City, Fort Dodge and Hartley topped the list of companies awarded the most in tax breaks and other assistance with 59 million dollars since 2003.

Flint Hills Resources Plants in Menlo, Shell Rock, Fairbank and Iowa Falls were awarded just less than 41 million dollars.

Critics question the amount of public money pumped into the industry, saying the state's corn supply would have seen the biofuel plants locate in Iowa anyway.
