First measurable snow fall triggers numerous crashes

Cedar Rapids Police officers got a major scare Thursday morning.

A driver lost control on Interstate 380 and slammed into a squad car sitting on the shoulder.

The squad car then hit an officer on foot investigating a previous crash.

Two officers were hurt.  Their injuries thankfully were not serious.

"People just need to remember to slow down and leave more space between the bumper in front of you," said Sgt. Cristy Hamblin with Cedar Rapids Police.

As of 10:00 Thursday morning, police had responded to more than a dozen accidents in town, including a driver who became disoriented from the poor visibility and turned onto the railroad tracks. Crews had to tow his car out.

Few problems had been reported on the Interstate outside of town.  Instead most of the problems had occurred within city limits.

"Here in the city, with the increased amount of car traffic combined with the other obstacles for the wind, the snow is accumulating more," said Craig Hanson with Cedar Rapids Public Works.

 That meant slick conditions.

City crews continued to work Thursday to clear the main roads and residential hilly areas.

The winter's first measurable storm brought with it many headaches.
