DECORAH (KWWL) -

After a year of deployment in Afghanistan and a week debriefing in Indiana, the Army Reserve 322nd Engineer Company is home in Decorah.

The celebration began Tuesday afternoon with hundreds of folks filling Water Street, waiting for a glimpse of their soldier. Terry Falck, the mother of SSGT Trevor Falck, was overwhelmed with emotion when she saw the buses pull onto the street.

"Just so happy. I knew he was in Indiana, but that wasn't safe yet. He needed to be with mom," she said.

The crowd quickly moved inside for the official welcome home at the Decorah High School auditorium. The ten minute ceremony is one the soldiers and family members have waited a year to experience, and now they can't wait to see it complete.

SSGT Falck said the entire ceremony, he was searching into the crowd for his loved ones.

"I couldn't see, the lights were so bright!" he said.

It's been a long year for the adults, but for the kids it felt like an eternity.

"It hit me when he said, 'Daddy's home,'" said Karen Frick, mother of two and wife of SGT Edward Frick.

SGT Frick embraced his five- and three-year-old boys, not wanting to let them go.

"It hits you when you see them the first time. It's... the nice past about it. Knowing you have someone to come home to. These guys make it worth everything," he said.

Now, the kids can't wait to get their mom or dad home, because there's a lot of catching up to do.

The Falck family said the first thing they were doing when they got home was celebrating Christmas. The kids waited until their dad was home to open presents, so they're getting a homecoming and Christmas rolled into one.

The 322nd Engineer Company is grateful to have returned home on time, with no casualties or any major injuries while in Afghanistan.
