Dunkerton City Council to discuss law enforcement matters

The Dunkerton City Council will have a "possibly closed session" on Monday to discuss law enforcement matters and investigations.

Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson has been invited to this meeting, but has not been informed of what specific matters the city will be discussing.

Thompson says that he has had a prior informal discussion with Dunkerton city officials about whether the county should take over law enforcement duties in Dunkerton. In that scenario, the city council would have to approve the elimination of the police department and formally outline its expectations to the sheriff's office.

Currently, the department consists of one-full time and two part-time officers.

The sheriff says the session on Monday could also be about a current investigation with the city. He would not clarify details on the investigation, but there have been allegations that the mayor of Dunkerton abused his power in after a recent traffic stop.
