A former teacher in Waterloo and Cedar Rapids has been arrested after being accused of having sex with a Waterloo West student.

Waterloo police arrested Brett David Messenger, 26, on Thursday.  He is charged with sexual exploitation by a school employee.

According to the criminal complaint, the student told another teacher that the relationship between her and Messenger started in April or May of 2011 and continued until late July or early August.

The incident was reported to police on December 8, 2011.

Officers say the victim told them that they began kissing at school and then had sex at Messenger's house before she graduated on May 26, 2011.

Messenger admitted to police that he had sex with the girl at his house in Waterloo on graduation night.

The Waterloo Community School District says that Messenger was employed with them for the 2010-2011 school year and resigned to take a job at Cedar Rapids Washington High School.

The Cedar Rapids Community School District says that Messenger was placed on administrative leave in December 2011 and resigned his job as an instrumental music instructor shortly after.

The College Community School District confirms that Messenger was the Associate Band Director at Prairie High School for the 2009-2010 school year before resigning to go to Waterloo West.

Court records show that Messenger was convicted of operating while intoxicated/second offense in August of 2009.  He was sentenced to seven days in jail and an $1,875 fine.

Messenger has since bonded out of the Black Hawk County jail.
