DYERSVILLE (KWWL) -

Caucus night provides a venue for not only local-level politics, but also community.

Dubuque County Republicans had four caucus locations Tuesday night. Three of them were in Dubuque.

The caucus in Dyersville, however, pooled the 12 precincts that fall outside Dubuque, including Peosta, Farley and Holy Cross.

More than 600 people packed into the auditorium at Beckman Catholic High School in Dyersville. This group of people heard one last appeal from people representing the GOP candidates.

Compared to larger gatherings, Dyersville caucus organizer Lois Taylor said getting more rural precincts together fosters a spirit of discussion and community.

"With the smaller towns, everybody pretty well knows one another, so it's kind of like a family gathering, where, if they would go to Dubuque, it wouldn't be the same," she said.

One of Dyersville's precincts collected its ballots in an Iowa baseball cap.

Each of the 12 precincts took its vote, hand-tallied the results and found nearly a three-way tie, collectively.

Ron Paul won this particular Dubuque County caucus location, with 154 votes. Romney came in second, with 151 votes and Santorum got third place, with 150 votes.
