Iowa City starts enforcement of moped parking rules

Moped operators in Iowa City are now required to park in designated spaces and get a permit or face a fine. City officials started enforcement of a new ordinance on Tuesday.

In June, the city unanimously passed the ordinance requiring the $45 permit. City council members are hoping that the concerns of pedestrians and bicyclists will fade as mopeds are no longer allowed to drive on sidewalks to use bike racks.

City officials set aside 142 spaces for mopeds in downtown Iowa City designed for mopeds. Those who are parked without a permit or at a city bike rack will face a $15 fine.

Permits may be purchased at the City's Parking Office at 335 Iowa Avenue between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
