IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

University of Iowa Professor Stephen Bloom, who generated a lot of criticism after his article on life in Iowa, appeared on NBC's "Rock Center with Brian Williams" Monday night.

In the article, "Observations from 20 Years of Iowa Life," Bloom accused Iowans of being small-minded and provincial.  He also described many Iowa towns as desolate places with nothing to do.

It was published online through The Atlantic, a magazine about foreign affairs, politics, the economy and cultural trends.  Critics, including the University of Iowa's president, have condemned the article for it's negative view of the state.

Bloom had turned down other interview opportunities before accepting this one.

He defended everything he said in the article. At one point in his interview with Willy Geist, he said his piece was suppose to be a "satire piece."  He said he doesn't feel bad about "speaking some unspeakable truths."

Bloom is currently in hiding after he and his family were threatened from the backlash of the article. When asked if he would return to Iowa, he said, "Yea, that's where I teach. That's where I've lived for 20 years. I'm not going to be bullied into leaving Iowa."
