It was published online through The Atlantic, a magazine about foreign affairs, politics, the economy and cultural trends. Critics, including the University of Iowa's president, have condemned the article for it's negative view of the state.
Bloom had turned down other interview opportunities before accepting this one.
He defended everything he said in the article. At one point in his interview with Willy Geist, he said his piece was suppose to be a "satire piece." He said he doesn't feel bad about "speaking some unspeakable truths."
Bloom is currently in hiding after he and his family were threatened from the backlash of the article. When asked if he would return to Iowa, he said, "Yea, that's where I teach. That's where I've lived for 20 years. I'm not going to be bullied into leaving Iowa."
