DES MOINES (KWWL) -

The Iowa National Guard will cut almost half of its tuition reimbursement for soldiers and airmen. It will take effect in the spring semester.

According to the Associated Press, a memo issued earlier this week said the National Guard Education Assistance Program award will be reduced from 90 percent to 50 percent during the next semester.

This brings the maximum semester award down from $2,888 to $1,604 per semester.

"It's certainly a blessing to us as an organization to have these young men and women who are not only dedicated to serving their state and their nation but also are dedicated to becoming better citizens" says Colonel Greg Hapgood, National Guard of Iowa public affairs officer.

The program is funded by the state and pays schools and universities for the education of servicemen and women.
