SYSK: Hospital volunteer receives "Shining Star" Award

Anna Mae Kuhn of Calmar is a familiar face at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

She volunteers at the hospital twice a month -- everything from helping at the information desk to escorting clinic patients to delivering flowers and mail.

"She's been volunteering here for many years, 40, if I'm not mistaken. She's raised a lot of children, but always found time for us and to help us, and that really is the fabric of our organization. We can't do what we do without volunteers like Anna Mae. It's just wonderful she was recognized for her effort," said Winneshiek Medical Center CAO Daniel Werner.

For her volunteering, Anna Mae Kuhn was honored with the "Shining Star of Your Hospital" Award through the Iowa Hospital Association.

She received the award in Des Moines.

"I guess it shows they do appreciate what we do for them," said Anna Mae.

Anna Mae said she started volunteering four decades ago after her husband had back surgery. She said neighbors and friends were so helpful, volunteering at the hospital was her way of returning the favor.

"I do enjoy it, and people are appreciative of what you do for them. You get a big smile and a thank you and it's worth it," said Kuhn.

In addition to her volunteer hours, Anna Mae has also made items to sell at the hospital gift shop.

Her dedication and service don't go unnoticed at the Winneshiek Medical Center.

"Thank you for helping us serve our community. That's why we're here is to serve our community, and she's just so gracious," said Daniel Werner.

Anna Mae Kuhn encourages others to find time to volunteer somewhere.

"It's very rewarding. We don't know when we may need somebody to help us," she said.

She said she'll be volunteering at the hospital for as long as she can.
