Dog helps save woman's life

Cyndee Bernard and her dog Dolly are always together.

"She's a four-year-old puggle I adopted in October from the Cedar Bend Humane Society in Waterloo after my dog of 14 years passed away," said Cyndee Bernard.

In just two months, the two have an incredible bond.

"She goes everywhere with me. We do everything together," said Bernard.

Bernard said sitting on the couch together is one of their favorite spots. Dolly just soaks up the attention, which Bernard is happy to give.

"I couldn't live without her. I don't know how whoever had her gave her up, but I'm glad they did," she said.

Cyndee Bernard and dolly got even closer recently. Bernard has several medical issues, and a couple weeks ago she wasn't feeling well and went to bed early.

"I went to bed and my husband was in the spare room. Dolly usually sleeps with me, but because I didn't feel good, I didn't take her," said Bernard.

During the night, Bernard said she got really sick, really fast.

In fact, she couldn't get out of bed to get help.

"I found a picture from the nightstand and threw it at the door which got Dolly's attention, and she kept jumping on my husband and going to my door until he came to see what was wrong," said Bernard.

An ambulance was called and Bernard spent a week in the hospital -- including two days in intensive care for organ failure.

Bernard is now back home recovering. She said without Dolly, her husband may not have gotten up in time.

"I would not have been here. I owe her my life," said Cyndee Bernard.

Dolly is just happy to have Cyndee back with her on the couch, giving her lots of love.
