Local golfers take advantage of warmer weather

Unseasonably warm weather is allowing some eastern Iowans to continue to play their favorite summer sport.

Mark Rolinger is a diehard golfer.

He couldn't pass up a chance to play a round and says the conditions are better now than early in the season.

"We start playing as soon as the course is open in March and this is no worse that what people come out this way in the Spring, it's just that people have other things to do right now and it's only the die-hard golfers right now that want to come out," Rolinger said.

Rolinger was one of about 60 die-hards teeing off at Gates Park the day after Christmas.

The greens are hardly green and there's ice at the bottom of some holes but it doesn't matter to those who love the game.

Gates Park is one of several courses still open.

"In November, you don't think you'll be open. If you get through the 1st, you'll be lucky. Hey, after Christmas, Christmas in Iowa! This is great!" head golf pro Nate Lubs said.

As for the quality of play, there were good shots to be made but the ground is solid.

The key to playing well?

"There is no key. Everything's frozen so you're kind of at the mercy of the golf course today," golfer Dan Sinnott said.

"I do know a few keys but even now, it's frozen so sometimes it's more like links golf - hit it low, keep it under the wind and hope it stops," said Lubs.

Officials say they plan to keep local courses open as long as the weather allows - and the golfers show up.

Gates Park and Irv Warren Golf Courses in Waterloo and Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls have discounted rates during the winter months.
