AAA projects 91 million Americans to travel this holiday season

Thousands of Iowans are expected to hit the road for the Christmas holiday weekend, and they will see lower gas prices and good weather.

The Kraker family is making one of many rest stops just outside of Iowa City on their way to Kansas City, Missouri for Christmas.

"Usually we only have to stop once if we didn't have kids, so it goes from being an 11 hour trip to a 13 hour trip," said Andrew Kraker.

It will be three-month-old Auden's first Christmas... But for the others, it's a trip they make every other year.

"We have fun when we go down there," Kraker said.

Gas is close to $3 a gallon in Iowa, but the trip will cost the Kraker's around $240 in gas.  Still it will be less than a plane ticket.

This year for the holidays, AAA projects fewer Americans will be taking to the skies and more will be driving.

Factor in relatively calm weather nationwide, and it's expected 83 million Americans will hit the roads this holiday season to be with family, up 2 percent from the year before.

For the Kraker's, the long trip, the traffic, and the costs will all be worth it come Christmas.

"There's not much I can do about it so I just deal with it.  We like to see our family no matter what," Kraker said.
